I teach Science 9 and 10, Biology 20 (grade 11) and Biology 30 (grade 12) at Evan Hardy. In 2008/2009, I brought one group of students to the CLS for Students on the Beamlines.

Project – I believe that the selection I have chosen to address along with Tracy Walker of the CLS, is the need to develop a guide that will ease the transition of teachers and students into their work at the CLS with the Students on the Beamlines Project. I believe that creating this guide and working outside of the school supports our school division goal of Student Engagement and will allow students and teachers to enter into the process of working at the CLS with much less anxiety and give them an overview as to what to expect from the SotB project. It is also my hope that it will help to prepare students and give them an understanding of the commitment that is involved in the SotB project, and get them excited about the special opportunity they have before them. I believe that any colleague that wishes to venture into the SotB project could benefit from the guide as it would give them information about the scientific process used in “real” science and they could follow the proc ess in a mock class experiment using it to write and design a proposal for submission, create and execute an experiment as well as create a science poster. I think that this is truly using the scientific method in a real life experience. I believe that creating a teacher/student guide for the CLS is unique because there are no other synchrotrons who have allowed students and teachers such amazing access to such a unique science facility. Perhaps by creating this guide, other synchrotrons could also institute outreach programs into their high schools as well.
