Peter MacDonald

Teacher, James M. Hill Memorial High School, NEW BRUNSWICK

Keen on developing a strong physics program that both develops critical thinking and prepares students for university academics.

Peter teaches physics, astronomy, computer science, and mathematics at James M. Hill Memorial high school in Miramichi, NB. When there is a need, he teaches math and junior science as well.

He has participated in summer synchrotron workshops for teachers and recently the Students on the Beamlines program. In this project, students were given a high degree of freedom to make decisions regarding their experiment, this gives the students a sense of ownership and responsibility they do not have in their high school classes. This project provides a glimpse of how experimental and theoretical science works at the university level and Peter has found that students gain a deeper respect for the researchers and the scientific method than they otherwise would have had.

Peter will be exhibiting that experience during SOSC 2010. He is very keen on developing a strong physics program that both develops critical thinking and prepares students for university academics.
